Sat May 19th 10pm -- My apologies as my update for the website did not go through to this subpage.  Our telescope session for May 19th was changed to a free public lecture (see news notice at http://physics.upei.ca).  In subsequent months, in order to avoid this issue, I will post any last minute change on the main physics notice feeds, the phone message and (when possible) through the google groups.

The Physics department and the Charlottetown chapter of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada  (RASC) have a free public viewing on the third Saturday of each month. The times for the viewings will vary from month to month depending on the daylight hours. The local RASC group also holds special "Moon on Monday" sessions near the quarter moon, and other astronomy events.

To sign up for email reminders of our viewing 1-3 days before the event and for any weather caused cancellation the day of the day, join our google notification group below. If you wish to stop receiving these messages, follow the link to the group and unsubscribe.

Location

The telescope dome is located on the rooftop of the Memorial building (Campus map). In the evening hours, after 7pm, parking lots are free, with parking lot "C" being the closest lot. Access to the building can be through either the main doors at the front, or off one side, where there is ramp access to a small side door.

Room 417, the room just before heading up that final flight of stairs to the roof,  is used as a gathering point. If there is a full set of people already in the dome, you can rest there until the next group is ready to go upstairs. Volunteers from the RASC group will have general astronomy information and more information about that night's viewing.

To get to the dome, you can take the stairwell to the very top of the building, or take the elevator to the fourth floor, and then walk up an extra flight of stairs to the rooftop, and then a few extra stairs into the dome.

Cancellation Notices

If it is raining, completely overcast, or the weather is predicted to be very poor, then the astronomy viewing will be cancelled. In that event, a message will be left at 902-566-0745, and through the news notice item at http://physics.upei.ca.  In order to reduce the number of pages updated (and thus the chance one is missed), this page will not be updated.

For the Fall Astronomy Day, most events can continue (lectures, displays, etc.) even in poor weather as they're held inside, but the outside events would be cancelled if is completely overcast or raining.  An alternate, indoor event, is planned for children for the afternoon solar viewing session. See the Fall 2010 Astronomy poster as an example.
